Artificial Light

"Artificial Light" is a series of images that combine landscape and still-life photography with digital overlays. The series' theme is the exploration of positive and negative space through manipulation. While we typically think of negative space as empty or black in photography, there are other ways to define it. In this series, I've created a visual interplay between positive and negative space by digitally painting graphic shapes in some cases, thus manifesting another element of space. I've chosen my color correction to balance the compositions and create harmony with the background image. In some, I've used a filtering algorithm to create directional movement, as in "Artificial Light." The

"Three Pears" image features an overlay that appears as a double exposure or shadow. The double exposure overlay creates a halo, a positive space, and a negative space beyond the halo, creating the illusion of a shadow and a second ghost image that creates movement between the foreground and background, thus creating visual interest. The grain of the photograph has been heightened purposely to create texture. In other words, the artist has used colorful geometric lines and shapes over attractive landscapes to break up the space and draw the viewer's attention to different image areas, creating visual energy and dynamics. Overall, the photographic style of the series plays with how we interpret a landscape, not as it was but how the artist saw it. My goal is to make visually striking and emotionally engaging images by taking creative license through my editorial process.
